For TMJ

woman with headache from TMJ or Migraine

Acupuncture can be an effective treatment for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (“TMJ” or “TMD).   Traditional theories of Chinese Medicine indicate that acupuncture acts by restoring the balanced flow of energy, or Qi. Modern research has shown that acupuncture is effective in treating TMJ possibly by directly stimulating nerve pathways thus changing the quality of signals along the pathway.  Acupuncture also releases endorphin and other neurotransmitters that help dampen and block pain perception by the brain.

TMJ can be the result of an injury to the joint, misalignment of the jaw and teeth,  excessive or vigorous chewing, or the use of orthodontics. Habitual clenching or grinding of the teeth, especially while sleeping, can cause or aggravate symptoms. Other symptoms can include decreased range of motion, locking, popping, clicking, or sudden misalignment of the teeth. TMJ can lead to pain that radiates to the face, head, neck, and shoulders. Some chronic sufferers experience headaches, dizziness, earaches, and even difficulty hearing.

About six (6) acupuncture treatments are recommend to begin the healing process and reduce pain. At avecinia wellness center, we can work with your Dentist or Orthodontist to create a treatment plan that best works for you and achieves the greatest results.
