What is acne?
Acne is a skin condition caused pores becoming clogged. Pores get clogged when glands produce too much oil and get blocked. Dirt, debris and bacteria build up and form a “plug” or “comedone” (forming whiteheads or blackheads). If the plug breaks, the resulting swelling forms red bumps that are the visible signs associated with acne.
Causes of acne can be:
||Acne is most common in teenagers with almost 3 out of 4 teenagers suffering from acne at some time. However, acne can occur at any age.|
||Hormonal changes due to menstrual periods, pregnancy, birth control pills or stress can trigger an acne outbreak.|
||Steroids, testosterone, estrogen and phenytoin can trigger acne.|
||Oily, greasy cosmetics and hair products can clog pores and trigger acne.|
||High levels of humidity and heavy sweating (without properly cleansing) can clog pores.|
What doesn’t trigger acne is chocolate, nuts, greasy food. However, diets high in refined sugar may increase acne.
